The great theatre and music festival under the title of Dubrovnik Summer Festival has taken place without inter¬ruption since 1950. The programme takes place between July 10 and August 25 on 33 open-air stages in the city. Owing to original historic places of old Dubrovnik, which are natural stages for many drama productions on account of their picturesque character, and places that become ideal for music productions on account of extraordinary acoustic properties -such the atrium of the Rector's Palace or the murvellous churches -the festival is known all over the world as a festival which attracts famous names of the theatre und music. Tho ambience is so much charged with historic meaning, artistic values and unmatched natural beauty that it is almoust an ideal framework for artistic pleasure of the highest level. The spectacular opening of the festival on July 10 is particularly impressive. The whole city and all the visitors take part in it. The focal ceremony of this unique night takes place in Luza Square, when Festival flag is hoisted on Roland's column.
